Those who feel that they have a “gummy” smile, or that their teeth appear short, can greatly benefit from esthetic crown lengthening. Your teeth may actually be the proper lengths, but they're covered with too much gum tissue. To correct this, your periodontist will recommended esthetic crown lengthening procedure. Crown lengthening ;exposes more of the natural tooth by reshaping or recontouring bone and gum tissue. This treatment can be performed on a single tooth, many teeth or the entire gum line, to expose a pleasant, aesthetically pleasing smile.
The amount of time this procedure takes will largely depend on how many teeth are involved. ;Prior to the procedure a local anesthetic will be administered to prevent any pain and discomfort. During the procedure, Dr. Shah will reduce excess gum and bone tissue and reshape your smile to expose more of the natural tooth. While the procedure can be performed on just one tooth, it is most often done to the entire smile. The end result is that more of the natural tooth is exposed creating a wider, more beautiful smile. Once the procedure is completed, Dr. Shah will clean the incisions with sterile water and place sutures and a protective bandage over the area to encourage the teeth and newly contoured gums to heal.
After the procedure, Dr. Shah may prescribe an analgesic medication and a special mouth rinse to reduce bacteria in the mouth and help during the healing process. Post-operative care instructions will be reviewed both verbally and given to you in writing. Following the post-operative care instructions is critical for success and for a positive experience. Soreness in the treated area, as well as cold sensitity, are common symptoms that will decrease during healing. ;A follow up appointment will be needed one to two weeks after the procedure to have the sutures removed and so that the doctor can evaluate healing. Complete healing usually takes two to three months.
